Spring has finally truly sprung! I don’t know if it seemed this way for anyone else, but the winter seemed to fight this year! “Come on!” I wanted to say, after I saw the temps drop one more time last week!
But it’s here, here to stay now and as I was enjoying the lake waves, birds chirping, and feeling the sun beat down I was reminded that all things are made new in time. Seasons really do come and go.
Being a mother to little ones, the season can seem long at times and we wonder how many nights will come and go that we don’t sleep all the way through. We wonder if our little beauty will always spit her food out on her clothing. We wonder if we will ever make it through the grocery line without little fingers grabbing for everything off the racks.
But then, it too passes.
One thing that helped me press on, and press on with joy as a young mother, was reminding myself to not lose myself in all the shuffle. I did one simple thing in order to pursue this: try one thing new each day that I am alive.
I started it years ago, and of course I miss days, but for the most part now it’s become habit. My kids will often here me mutter under my breath, “I’ve never done this before, this is my new thing today.”
Yesterday I tried a new coconut water I’d never tasted.
The day before I ran a route I’d never run.
The day before that I wore a skirt to the lake I’d never worn out yet.
The day before that I tried my hair in a updo I’d seen on Instagram, a new style for me.
The day before I bought broccoli and tried a new recipe to see if the kids would eat it. They still didn’t like it!
I’m sure you get the idea. The key is to be intentional. Intentionally think, “Today, I will do something new.”
Walk your kids in this newness too! Show them the joys of pursuing new ideas, styles, concepts, walks, places, foods, and even friends. It makes the difference often times between being alive, and actually living a full life. Showing them, speaking of this, and doing it with our kids grows in them an excitement about life.
A life very much worth living.
When mommying feels like it will get the best of me, “Me” must find little snippets of time for me. Make those times, times of newness. Let your brain and heart jump or skip a beat a little in the wonder of the outcome. Stay alive as opposed to just living and let your kids see the fun you have in those little newnesses.
Don’t lose yourself. Then, you will have what it takes to help them find themselves.
